FAQs About Medications Before Surgery
If you take any of the following medications, you make take them the morning of your surgery with a small sip of water.
Examples of each medication are listed below:
- Blood Pressure: Atenolol, Metoprolol, Nadol, Catopril, Lisinopril, Valsartan, Amlodipine, diltiazem hydrochloride, verapamil hydrochloride, doxazosin mesylate, carvedilol, labetolol hydrochloride, clonidine, hydralazine hydrocholoride
- Cholesterol: Simvastatin, Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor, Pravastatin, Vytorin
- Acid Reflux/Stomach: Omeprazole, Zantac, Pepcid
- Thyroid: Synthroid, Levothyroxine
- Blood Thinners: Please see Pre-Op Instruction Sheet
- Diet Pills: Please see Pre-Op Instruction Sheet
- Diabetic Meds: You may take all regular diabetic medications the day before surgery.
- Long acting Insulin (Lantus, Levemir) – Take the full dose the night before surgery.
- Intermediate Insulin (NPH Insulin)- Take the full NPH dose the night before surgery.
- Insulin Pump- Insulin Pumps should only deliver basal rate (not bolus)
Do NOT take on the DAY of Surgery
- Amaryl (Glimiperide), Glucophage, Metformin, Glipizide, Glyburide, Actos, Januvia, Prandin, Avandia
- Short-Acting Insulin(Lispro, Regular, Aspart, Glulisine)
- Mixed-Insulin (e.g. Insulin 70/30)
- Lasix (furosemide)
If you normally take insulin in the mornings, please check with your primary care doctor as you may need to take a decreased dose depending on your blood sugar levels.
FMLA/Disability Requests
FMLA and Disability paperwork are common forms we fill out after surgery.
Your employer will provide you with the necessary paperwork. Please bring this to our office as early as possible prior to your surgery. The estimated turn around time is 7-10 days from the time we receive the paperwork.
